Anti-Idling Program
Idling 295pxUnnecessary vehicle idling not only wastes fuel and money, but it contributes to climate change and affects our health.

Idling for ten seconds burns more fuel than restarting your engine!
On average, idling ten minutes a day wastes 100 litres of gas a year!

Idling contributes to climate change!
Idling produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that is a major contributor to climate change.  Every hour of idling wastes 0.6 litres of fuel which results in 1.4 kg of carbon dioxide entering the environment.  Click to learn more about Climate Change and Idling.

Idling affects our health!
The exhaust emissions directly affect the health of our residents, especially children, seniors and people with respiratory problems.  Click to learn more about the Health Effects of Idling.

Idling damages our vehicles!
Idling actually damages a vehicle's cylinders, spark plugs, and exhaust system.  Since an idling engine isn't operating at its peak temperature, the fuel combustion is incomplete which results in residues that condense on the cylinder walls.  This contaminates the oil and damages the engine's components.

You can do your part to reduce unnecessary vehicle idling!
  • Turn off your engine if you are going to be waiting more than 10 seconds! (except in traffic)
  • Keep your vehicle well maintained. A poorly tuned engine can burn up to 15 per cent more fuel!
