Diesel Engines & Idling
Idling 150pxThere are some legitimate reasons why diesel trucks and buses idle, however there are some misconceptions regarding idling and diesel engines.

Initial Start-up

Most engine manufacturers recommend that newer engines run for approximately three to five minutes prior to driving.

Restarting

Some engine manufacturers recommend letting your engine idle for a few minutes after you stop, however most newer diesel engines will stay warm for several hours after stopping.  Check the manufacturer's recommendations for older vehicles.

Wear and Tear

Excessive and unnecessary idling produces sulphuric acid that breaks down the oil and eats into bearings, rings, valve stems and engine surfaces.  This can result in increased maintenance costs and a shortened engine lifespan.
