Benefits of Alternate-Week Garbage Collection
The key driver for the change to alternate-week garbage
collection is to reduce the amount of garbage being sent to the landfill.Key benefits of the new schedule include:
- Diversion of potentially 2,400 tonnes of household waste from the landfill each year. This is of critical importance, as the Cache Creek landfill is due to close in 2012.
- Containment of the escalating garbage disposal costs, which are expected to almost double in the next five years. The new schedule could result in a savings to taxpayers of $225,000 over five years.
- Helping Port Coquitlam reach Metro Vancouver’s goal of diverting 70% of household waste from the landfill. (The current diversion rate is 52-55%.)
