You don't use the trash can as a toilet. Why should your pet?
According to Metro Vancouver, 15,000 tonnes of pet waste ends up in the landfill, where it decomposes and generates methane gas. Methane gas is a greenhouse gas that is about 21 times more potent than CO2.
The City of Port Coquitlam provides dog owners with biodegradable pet waste bags in many local parks. These bags are only intended for transporting the pet waste for proper disposal.
It is not permitted to place bags of dog waste into public or private garbage cans or to throw them into bush areas - even if the bag itself is biodegradable.
Proper pet waste disposal:
- Flush dog and cat feces (not kitty litter).
- Build a pet waste composter.
- Hire a professional pet waste disposal service.
- Search the internet for pet toilet training techniques.
