BC-Jeongju Hanji Cultural Arts Festival

Port Coquitlam, BC: Please join us on Saturday, August 22nd at 2 pm at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village as we celebrate the Korean art of Hanji – a centuries old tradition of making paper with the bark of the mulberry tree. Come enjoy the extraordinary fashion show of unique paper garments along with traditional and contemporary hanji artwork created by over 30 local and Korean artists, listen to Korean drumming and watch the graceful dancers from the Vancouver Korean Dance Society.
Korean artists have moved the tradition of hanji beyond its original borders, making not only beautiful papers, but also paper yarns, and fabrics using silk, cotton, or linen warp and paper weft. North American audiences will get a first hand glimpse of wearable art and traditional and contemporary fine craft made of hanji. It will be complemented by hanji inspired artwork created by various artists in Metro Vancouver which has been combined with local materials and their interpretation.
This is a collaborative project between the Millennium Jeongju Hanji Forum, Vancouver Guild of Fibre Arts, Greater Vancouver Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild, FibreEssence, Craft Council of BC, Emily Carr University, Canadian Society for Asian Arts, Leigh Square Community Arts Village and Fibre Works Gallery.
The Leigh Square Community Arts Village is dedicated to encouraging and facilitating community development through arts, culture and heritage by creating a visible presence for community cultural activities within Port Coquitlam and contributing to the enlivening of the downtown core.
