FIRE PREVENTION WEEK – OCTOBER 7th to 13th, 2012
The reality is that when fire strikes, your home could be engulfed in smoke and flames in just a few minutes. It is important to have a home fire escape plan that prepares your family to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds. What if your first escape route is blocked by smoke or flames? That's why having two ways out is such a key part of your plan.
This year's theme, "Have 2 Ways Out!" focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and practice. Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time for you to reach out to your community and empower the citizens to have a hand in preventing on home fires and protecting their families with life-saving technologies and planning.
Basic Smoke Alarm Safety Tips:
- Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home (including the basement), outside each sleeping area, and inside each bedroom.
- Larger homes may need additional smoke alarms.
- Never remove or disable smoke alarms.
- Test smoke alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button.
- If an alarm “chirps,” warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
When you go home today, be a smoke alarm detective!
- Ask an adult to show you where the smoke alarms are in your home.
- Ask an adult to test the smoke alarms to make sure they are working.
