Heritage is what we inherit from the past, value in the present and plan to preserve for the future.
In recognition of the value of heritage, the City of Port Coquitlam retained heritage consultant Donald Luxton & Associates in 2009 to prepare a Heritage Strategic Plan for Port Coquitlam.
Based on extensive community input, the Plan was received by Council on December 13, 2010.
The Vision for Heritage in Port CoquitlamWe embrace and celebrate the broad scope of Port Coquitlam’s rich history and heritage legacy. Our past, present and future will be connected through the conservation of heritage resources, celebrations, of community history and traditions, and the creation of community heritage partnerships.
We recognize the value of our community’s unique history, and will promote and conserve our heritage homes, neighbourhoods, artifacts, personal histories and cultural and natural landscapes. Our heritage initiatives will enrich our citizens, offer opportunities for education and awareness and involve the whole community.
The Plan
Port Coquitlam’s Heritage Strategic Plan provides a direction to recognize and manage the City’s unique and valued heritage resources. The main recommendations of the Plan are based on community values expressed during the stakeholder consultation process and include the following three goals:
- Conserve heritage resources,
- Celebrate community history and traditions, and
- Create community heritage partnerships.
Based on extensive community input, the plan includes a total of 25 strategic actions to achieve the three stated community goals. The strategic actions are grouped according to a proposed timeframe for Plan implementation: immediate, medium term and ongoing actions.

The Process
The
preparation of the Heritage Strategic Plan for Port Coquitlam involved
a review of the existing situation, public consultation by means of
stakeholder community meetings and workshops, a public open house,
displays and a survey.
The input from residents, private and public sector community groups and organizations resulted in the identification of a shared vision of heritage for Port Coquitlam.
A draft Port Coquitlam Heritage
Strategic Plan was submitted to the City in June 2010 for comprehensive
staff review. The document was reviewed by the City’s Social Inclusion
Committee and a community workshop was held on October 27, 2010 to
obtain final in put into the plan.
The Heritage Strategic Plan was received by Council on December 13, 2010.
