How do I apply for a position with the City of Port Coquitlam?

Who can apply?
You must be legally entitled to work in Canada, which means you must be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), or hold a valid work permit.

Do I have to fill out an application form if I have already sent in a resume?
An application may be attached but is not necessary provided your resume is complete. You can download an application here.

Does the City accept general applications?
The City no longer accepts unsolicated application. Current positions are listed under Employment Opportunities.

What if my resume, qualifications or address changes?
Make the changes on your application and re-submit it. We will add your new application to our database. Your application will be valid for four months from the date we receive it.

Can you make copies of my application when I turn it in? 
Unfortunately, we cannot make copies of your application for your own reference. If you require a copy of your application, please complete this prior to submission.

If I am interested in several positions with the City of Port Coquitlam, must I submit an application for each posting?
We consider every posting separately. If you are applying for several positions, please submit a separate application for each position. Make sure that the position you are applying for is clearly identified on all correspondence.

How are applications assessed?
All applicants are assessed relative to the qualifications listed on the job posting. Normally, only those applicants who meet the stated qualifications are eligible for further consideration. Meeting the minimum qualifications of the posting does not guarantee that you will be short listed for the position posted, as all applicants are assessed on a competitive basis.

Does the City of Port Coquitlam require potential candidates to consent to a criminal record search?
All positions require a satisfactory criminal record search prior to an offer of employment.

What if I have a criminal record and want to apply to the City of Port Coquitlam?
Having a criminal record does not exclude you from employment with the City of Port Coquitlam. When the City receives your Criminal Record Search information, we review your record in confidence, considering the nature of the offense, when the offense took place, and the relevance of the offense to the position for which you are applying  Candidate honesty is paramount. Failure to inform the City fully may result in forfeiture of your rights to employment with the City.

Does the City accept resumes for Firefighter positions?
We accept applications for firefighter positions only when we are actively recruiting.  When recruiting, the information will be available on the web site and advertised in the newspaper.

How can I find out about the status of the position I applied for? 
Positions usually take four to six weeks to fill. Because of the large volume of resumes we receive, we regret that we can notify only short listed candidates. If you have not heard from the City of Port Coquitlam within the stated time, you can assume that you will not be considered further for that position.

I have applied for several positions with the City of Port Coquitlam and haven't been hired. What can I do to improve my chances of finding employment with the City?
We consider every competition separately. The number of positions you apply for does not increase your opportunity for being hired. We encourage all interested applicants to apply for positions if they are qualified. Every application will be given equal consideration in the hiring process.
