    Priorities

    star   
    Increase RCMP staffing by 25 officers over the next 5 years.

    o       March 2009 - Approved funding for a share of nine new RCMP officers for the local detachment.

      Increase funding and secure data connections to Community Police Stations.

    o        In progress – efforts to establish a secure link between Community Police Station on Mary Hill Road and the Coquitlam Detachment Headquarters. Completion targeted for late fall 2009.

    Create a Crisis Intervention Team utilizing city, police, health and
    treatment personnel to deliver solutions and crime reduction in hotspots 
                and areas with people who are homeless.

    Address homelessness in Port Coquitlam through a multi-disciplinary
    team of stakeholders, including Federal and Provincial governments, 
                non-profits and the faith-based community.

    o      March 2009 - Launched Mayor's Action Team on Homelessness (MATH)

    Develop neighbourhood associations to foster greater community safety
    through the active involvement of people living within Port Coquitlam’s 
                various neighbourhoods.

    o        Held meetings with residents to form a team to initiate and assist in the establishment of neighbourhood associations.

    Work with the Union of British Columbia Municipalities on defining the new policing contracts for British Columbia.

    o        Current contract expires in 2012.

    Create a pedestrian-friendly and safe environment with increased security and lighting throughout the city.

    starImplement Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) for all new building and any hotspots.

    Develop a bylaw and licensing system (Good Neighbour Agreement) to
    control the number and location of group housing, transition houses and 
                recovery homes.

    o        Tasked Social Inclusion Committee with developing a licencing system; report to Council expected in early fall.

    Continue to support and expand drug and alcohol prevention programs such as Meth Watch.

    Address escalating bear problem.

    o      Assigned responsibility for bear awareness and response to Community Safety Committee.

    o        Funded the Bear Aware program
