The Shaughnessy Prairie Avenue Transportation Plan considers the area bounded by the Coquitlam River, Prairie Avenue, Coast Meridian Road and Lougheed Highway.
Most
of the area today is zoned for single-family homes, with some
apartments and commercial uses along Lougheed Highway. However, a
higher density of residential development, such as apartments and
townhouses, is planned for the area in the future. The Official Community Plan designations for the area include:
- apartments on the area’s west side and southwest of Coast Meridian Road,
- retention of single family-homes on the east side of the area, and
- retention of commercial uses along Lougheed Highway.
- improve traffic safety,
- improve cycling and pedestrian facilities,
- maintain neighbourhood accessibility, and
- integrate the improvements with adjacent land uses.
Public Input and Consultation
The City of Port Coquitlam retained consultants Opus Hamilton to complete the draft Shaughnessy Prairie Area Transportation Study. The study reflects the public input that was collected by the City for the Official Community Plan, Master Transportation Plan, Zoning Bylaw, Master Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan and other planning processes.

The Open House was intended to provide information about the plan and collect input regarding the planned transportation improvements in the Shaughnessy Prairie area.
Sixteen comments were received on issues including pedestrian and cyclist safety, transit, access and traffic flow, the road network, traffic accidents, and the planned improvements. The City of Port Coquitlam will respond to all comment sheets that included contact information.
The feedback received will inform a revised report that will be reviewed by the City’s Public Works Traffic Committee (PWTC), at which stage the public will have a further opportunity to provide input. The PWTC will then recommend the final area transportation plan for City Council’s review and adoption.
