Green Holiday Tips
Excess and waste don’t have to be part of the holiday season. Enjoy a “green” Christmas this year – create memories, not garbage!
Reduce
Re-use
Recycle

Every year there is a surge of garbage in January, attributed to Christmas decorating, meals and gifting.
More ideas from Metro Vancouver for reducing waste at Christmas.
- Buy thoughtful gifts that won’t end up in the garbage. More isn’t always better.
- Choose gifts with less packaging.
- Rather than buying “stuff”, give the gift of time (e.g. your services or expertise), or an experience (e.g. a dinner out or recreation centre passes).
- Give a group gift – pool resources to buy a high quality gift.
- Make a donation to charity on behalf of that person who has everything.
- Make gifts rather than buying them. For example, bake some of your famous cookies and include the recipe.

Re-use
- Consider using an artificial or live tree rather than a cut tree.
- Use re-usable gift bags or newspaper instead of wrapping paper.
- Save gift wrap, tissue, ribbons and bows for re-use.
Recycle
- Donate unwanted gifts and Christmas decorations to charity rather than throwing them away.
-
Place all your food scraps and food-soiled papers into your green cart, and/or place all compostable items into your backyard composter.
- Place recyclable packaging and papers into your blue cart.
- Your cut tree can be cut up and placed in your green cart or recycled into re-usable mulch and chips at a local charity tree-chipping event. Click here for information about both of these options.
