The purpose of Council remuneration is to provide an incentive for community members to hold public office and to show appreciation for those that dedicate their time and effort to the governance responsibility of City services, operations and programs.
Remuneration for Port Coquitlam City Council is calculated annually in accordance with Council Remuneration Policy #7.14 and is intended to provide fair compensation in a transparent manner.
In accordance with Port Coquitlam's Council Remuneration Policy, the remuneration rates for Council as of July 1, 2010 are as follows:
- Mayor - $85,418 per annum
- Councillor - $31,654 per annum
- Acting Mayor Stipend - $1,189/month (each Councillor is assigned two months per year to serve as Acting Mayor)
Reumeration Review
The Council Remuneration Policy requires that, effective January 1st each year, the City's Financial Officer revise the current annual remuneration by the rate of change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Vancouver for the 12 months ended October 31 in the previous calendar year. Council approval is required for remuneration adjustment under this section only if the adjustment exceeds 5%.
In addition, the policy states that the Council Remuneration Policy #7.14 be reviewed every three years and that the rate for the Mayor to be revised to the average of the two Metro Vancouver municipalities immediately larger (population wise) than Port Coquitlam and the two municipalities immediately smaller than Port Coquitlam. Currently, the comparator municipalities are Maple Ridge and New Westminster and the North Vancouver City and West Vancouver respectively.

2009 Citizen Task Force Review
In February 2009, Council appointed a Citizen Task Force to review the Council Remuneration Policy. The Task Force, made up of six Port Coquitlam citizens conducted the first independent review of the Council Remuneration Policy since 1994.
The report on the task force recommendations went to Council on March 23, 2009. The citizen task force recommended an annual cost-of-living adjustment to Council remuneration and that a review of items covered in the Council Remuneration Policy be conducted in the middle of each term, with the next review to be completed by June 2010 or 2013.
Based on the Citizen Task Force recommendations, Council reviewed and updated the Council Remuneration Policy on July 26, 2010.
