The lawn sprinkling and water use regulations are necessary to manage the demand for drinking water during the summer period and are in effect from June 1 to September 30 each year.
In June 2011, the City updated its bylaws to reflect the new regional sprinkling restrictions, which are designed to reduce peak water use during the summer months, when water use almost doubles and rainfall is at its lowest. Download the Water Shortage Response Plan Bylaw 3768 (PDF).
The Metro Vancouver water restriction plan has four stages and we are currently in Stage 1 where the following regulations apply:
From June 1 to September 30, sprinkling is permitted as follows:
- Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4 to 9 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays
- Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4 to 9 am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays
Lawn Sprinkling – Commercial
From June 1 to September 30, sprinkling is permitted as follows:
- Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1 to 6 am on Mondays and Wednesdays
- Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1 to 6 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays
- All non-residential properties may sprinkle 4 to 9 am on Fridays
These restrictions are crucial to managing the demand for drinking water during the summer period, and are Stage 1 of the region's Water Shortage Response Plan. As set out in the Plan, during long, dry periods, it may become necessary to further restrict sprinkling. Details will be available here, as well as through various media sources.
Exceptions
Permits for new lawns and landscaping A new lawn – placing of sod, turf or by seeding – or landscaping requires a permit in order to be exempt from the lawn sprinkling restrictions. A permit is available and allows lawn sprinkling at any time during the duration of the permit. The permit is $30 and is valid for a period of 21 days from the date of issuance.
To apply for a lawn sprinkling permit, contact the Engineering & Operations Department at 604.927.5420 or engineering@portcoquitlam.ca, or drop by at the address below.
