Port Coquitlam community organizations that want to showcase their talents or accomplishments are invited to apply to the Council Community Connections program in 2012.
Created in December 2008, the program provides schools, youth groups and non-profit organizations the opportunity to make a presentation during regular Council meetings. It does not replace the public’s opportunity to appear as a delegation before City Council, but rather gives Port Coquitlam community members a chance to celebrate and share their accomplishments and initiatives as part of civic life.
The program is coordinated by the Port Coquitlam Spirit Committee and is intended to help build community spirit and pride while reflecting the social, cultural, active and creative diversity of Port Coquitlam. Past presenters have included choirs, schools, sports groups, dance troupes, community event organizers and environmental groups.
Port Coquitlam groups are encouraged to apply for this opportunity to generate local interest and support for what they do.
Applicants must submit their request to communityconnections@portcoquitlam.ca at least 30 days before the desired presentation date. The program criteria:
- Applicants must be a Port Coquitlam school, youth group, non-profit and/or recognized community group, association or activity.
- Presentations must be less than five minutes in length, be feasible within the space and technical constraints of the Council chambers, and must not be intended for pecuniary or professional benefit.
- Presentations must meet broadcast requirements for appropriate content (e.g. suitable for a daytime television audience).
The presentations take place at the beginning of the regular Council meetings, held on the second and fourth Monday of the month (excluding August and statutory holidays), at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers in City Hall.
