2023 PoCo Best Biz Award Winners

Congratulations to the 100 nominees and 5 winners of the 2023 PoCo Best Biz Awards! The awards were presented at the PoCo Best Biz Awards Celebration, a night of networking, refreshments, and celebration held on March 1, 2023 at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre.

Cassandra Cake Co.: Entrepreneur of the Year

The Entrepreneur of the Year category shines a spotlight on people or businesses who: have developed an innovative business concept with good development potential, have shown creativity and innovation in overcoming the challenges faced by new businesses, and have shined a light on Port Coquitlam by attracting attention regionally.

This year’s winner, Cassandra Cake Co., is Port Coquitlam’s only custom cake bakery and tea house. Since opening, this bakery has seen continued growth, going above and beyond by consistently supporting various charities, either with baking or donations. They offer baking workshops and arts and craft workshops, thus supporting other small businesses.

Room to Roam Outdoor Learning: Home-based Business of the Year

The winner of the Home-based Business of the Year award has demonstrated some or all of the following characteristics: significant growth and sustainability in business operations and a commitment to excellent customer service, and creativity and innovation in overcoming the common challenges facing small businesses.

This year’s winner, Room to Roam Outdoor Learning, opened in 2021 by providing outdoor summer camps for preschoolers. They offer programs in our local beautiful parks rain or shine. They build connections for children with these parks with the aim that children love the outdoor environment and become future environmental stewards of our natural spaces.

Emilio Finatti: Small Business of the Year

Small Business of the Year goes to a business with 1 to 15 employees, who: bring positive attention to Port Coquitlam through their business success, innovation or marketing; show leadership in social and cultural responsibility through volunteerism, advocacy, sponsorship, financial and in-kind contributions; and provide outstanding customer service.

This year’s winner, Emilio Finatti, has the most creative pizzas with ever-evolving flavours. The food and ambiance are perfect for family dining. Eat a delicious meal outside at an award-winning thin-crust pizzeria! This business is located in our local brewery-filled area of Port Coquitlam. They are always supporting local businesses in the area. They provide outstanding customer service along with their amazing pizzas with the fabulous honey-drizzled crust!

Aspira Astoria Retirement Living: Big Business of the Year

The Big Business of the Year award recognizes businesses with more than 16 employees, who: bring positive attention to Port Coquitlam through their business success, innovation or marketing; show leadership in social and cultural responsibility through volunteerism, advocacy, sponsorship, financial and in-kind contributions; and provide outstanding customer service.

This year’s winner, Aspira Astoria Retirement Living, has suites for seniors where they can come live in a safe environment where everything is included. They don’t have to worry about cooking and cleaning, and they have a dedicated activities program with health, wellness, and exercise programs for all levels. They offer peace of mind for families knowing their loved ones are living in a safe all-inclusive style environment. They take pride in making a difference in people’s health and well-being on a daily basis, both with residents that live there and for future residents. This business helps to educate families in navigating their journeys in healthcare and steps for loved ones as they age.

Richelle Nails and Spa: People’s Choice Award

Each business nominated this year was also entered to win the People’s Choice Award. The public was invited to vote for their favourite business – one that has shown excellence in business and makes an outstanding positive contribution to the community.

This year’s winner, Richelle Nails and Spa, pulled in almost 570 online votes! At our 2018 PoCo Best Biz Awards, they won as well in this category. This business is a small service provider that is obviously treasured by its loyal customer base!
