Public Safety Inspection Team
The Port Coquitlam Public Safety Inspection (PSI) project was launched in 2008 following a successful pilot project.
The purpose of the team is to reduce the public safety risks associated with growing marijuana or producing drugs in a residential setting. These include fire, structural, health and other hazards.
Bylaw No. 3602
How the PSI Team Works
The PSI Team is made up of staff from Bylaw Services, Fire & Emergency Services and Development Services.
The team inspects properties with unusual electrical consumption and other indicators of a possible grow operation, and in some cases declares them to be controlled substance properties under the Controlled Substance Nuisance Bylaw.
If properties have unusual electrical consumption but no evidence of grow operations is found, the team identifies any potential safety problems and provides owners with advice on how to correct them. All owners are referred to BC Hydro’s Power Smart program.
The PSI Team operates on the basis of full cost recovery from owners of controlled substance properties. No costs are borne by the general taxpayers or by owners of properties without controlled substance involvement.
