Fremont Connector Project

Fremont Connector Project

In late 2021, Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam completed the preliminary design and alignment for the future Fremont Connector, the 4.7-kilometre arterial road that will link north Port Coquitlam with northeast Coquitlam.

Detailed design of the project is now in progress, with construction anticipated to begin in the next several years.

Project Background

The two cities have been working closely together to plan the important route, which will meet current and future transportation needs in both communities.

While the Fremont Connector has been identified in the Official Community Plans and transportation plans of both cities for many years, the need for the route continues to grow as more homes and development come to the area.

The project will bring:

  • Important road and active transportation improvements to support Metro Vancouver’s northeast sector;
  • Improved access for residents and businesses; and
  • Reduced traffic in other areas of the road network, including Coast Meridian Road, Prairie Avenue and Cedar Drive.

Preliminary Design Details

The preliminary design for Fremont Connector consists of two travel lanes, intersection improvements and an adjacent multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists.

The preliminary alignment:

  • Follows the existing Fremont Street road allowance from the east end of Victoria Drive south to Lincoln Avenue;
  • Continues south from Lincoln Avenue along the existing road alignments for Devon Road, Prairie Avenue and Burns Road; and
  • Joins the completed southern section of the Fremont Connector, which links to Lougheed Highway and the Mary Hill Bypass.

More details will be provided during the community engagement process

Next Steps

  • Public consultation, design and permitting will begin in 2023/2024.
  • As the detailed design proceeds, the cities will seek provincial and federal infrastructure grant funding for the project.
  • Construction is anticipated to begin in 2024/2025.
