Live Fire Training Building

The Live Fire Training Building provides fire crews with regular and immediate access to critical hands-on training.

Live fire training is necessary to enable firefighters to not only act appropriately and confidently to extinguish fires, but to recognize the risks and know when to remove themselves from life-threatening situations. The building enables the City to cost-effectively provide its firefighters with the mandatory WorkSafe BC and the National Fire Protection Association training.

Measuring 40 feet long and 24 feet wide, the three-storey structure was designed to simulate a low-rise walk-up apartment building, where firefighters must use internal stairways and ladders to access fires on the upper floor. This is one of the most common fires encountered by local firefighters.

Located at Fire Hall No. 1, the building is constructed from metal shipping containers and features three specially designed burn rooms of various sizes, connected by internal stairwells, doors and doorways that crews will have to move through with hoses and equipment. Large outdoor decks off the second and third floors can be accessed through the building or by ladder from the ground.

Firefighter training in the building to date has included:

  • Fire, smoke and heat theory,
  • Hands-on live fire attack in the interior rooms and stairwells as well from the building exterior and decks,
  • Officer command training,
  • Hose and pump practice,
  • Confined space rescues,
  • Search and rescue under simulated fire conditions with heavy smoke,
  • Ventilation to aid in fire attach and searches, and
  • Mandatory training including high-angle rope rescues, ground and aerial ladders, and rapid intervention teams (to rescue other firefighters).

The building will also be used for hazardous materials training, simulated warehouse entries, and other training scenarios that are now in development.

Corporate clients and other municipal fire departments interested in renting the building may contact the City.
