Celebrate Canada 150 on Aug. 26 with Arts, Music and Nature Festival
Mark your calendar for Aug. 26, when Port Coquitlam celebrates Canada’s 150th birthday with a free arts, music and nature festival headlined by Vancouver international recording and touring sensations Delhi 2 Dublin.
Canada 150: Celebrate Our Journey will be a day-long celebration taking place 12 to 4 p.m. in Lions Park and 2 to 9 p.m. in Leigh Square.
The day will begin at noon with a celebration of rivers and trails in Lions Park, including an opening ceremony, live music and entertainment, displays, food, hands-on activities with environmental stewards, guided nature walks and more until 4 p.m.
Entertainment will include champion Lil’wat Nation hoop dancer Alex Wells and pop-up dance performances in surprise locations between Lions Park and Leigh Square.
Starting at 2 p.m., Leigh Square will come alive with hands-on arts and cultural activities, storytelling, live dancing and music, along with food trucks and a beverage garden.
Event-goers can paint a tile for the Canada 150 Mosaic, a national public art project that is creating a giant mural made up of tiles and artwork from across the country. Port Coquitlam’s community mural, made up of tiles painted on Aug. 26, will be installed at the Outlet in Leigh Square, creating a new piece of public art for the community and a permanent reminder of Canada 150.
Other cultural activities at Leigh Square will include a canoe display and stories by the Kwikwetlem First Nation, and a chance for residents to share their story with PoCo Heritage, have a souvenir photo taken and get a sneak peek at the upcoming Terry Fox exhibit.
Headliners Delhi 2 Dublin will hit the stage at 7 p.m., bringing a dynamic show featuring a blend of live and electronic bhangra, hip hop and world pop. Formed in 2006, the band has performed at festivals and concerts around the world and is known for its energy onstage.
On stage at the Leigh Square bandshell:
- Jodi Proznick Quartet, led by an internationally renowned Port Coquitlam bassist
- Alex Wells, a champion Lil’wat Nation hoop dancer
