City of Port Coquitlam Transitions Swim Lessons to Lifesaving Society of BC
The City of Port Coquitlam is reminding residents of the changes being made to swimming lesson programs for winter 2023 at both the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre and the Port Coquitlam Community Centre.
Beginning this month, January 2023, aquatics will transition its swimming lessons to the Lifesaving Society of BC following the Canadian Red Cross’s announcement that it is ending its 75-year history of providing swim training and lifesaving skills. As a result of this, aquatics will be transitioning from Red Cross Swim Lessons to Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Lessons. The Lifesaving Society has been involved in swimming and water safety for over 100 years and will be taking over most of the swim programming in Canada. Additional information on the Lifesaving Society can be found at lifesaving.bc.ca.
The change is now in place. Please visit portcoquitlam.ca/swimming on the City’s website for more information.
Please note that course levels may not line up exactly between the two organizations and some levels may differ from where the swimmer was placed previously. To choose the correct level, please view the transition chart on the City’s website at portcoquitlam.ca/swimming, or for questions about the transition please email recreation@portcoquitlam.ca or call 604.927.7529 (PLAY).
Registration for spring programs open for Port Coquitlam residents on Feb. 21 and to the general public on Feb. 24. View all winter activities in the winter leisure guide online at portcoquitlam.ca/leisureguide.
