Come Play Piano in Port Coquitlam – Show Your Canadian Pride

The public is invited to help liven parks in Port Coquitlam with the sound of piano music.

As last year’s piano in Veterans Park was a popular feature to downtown Port Coquitlam, the City is expanding the program this year. Pianos will also be placed at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre (1379 Laurier Ave), Settlers Park (1250 Confederation Dr.), and Lions Park (2300 Lions Way) for the public to play.

The program will be launched on July 14 as part of the PoCo Grand Prix event with a performance by Marya Ricker, Musical Director and Owner of Tri-City School of Music at 2:45 pm on the Veterans Park piano.

This year, the pianos have been painted with unique designs by local artists Elvira González, Ashley Carpenter, Katelyn Sieb, and the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation.

As part of the City’s Canada 150 celebrations, the public is also invited to post a video on social media of them playing ‘O Canada’ or another Canadian composition on one of the public pianos. Anyone who posts a video using #pococanada150 will be entered to win a $100 gift card which will be announced at the Canada 150 Celebration on August 26.

The pianos are provided as part of the Pianos on the Street outdoor music project and will be available until the end of summer. Pianos on the Street is a community engagement initiative spearheaded by Pacey’s Pianos and the Piano Teachers Federation in partnership with the City of Port Coquitlam.

Since 2014, Pianos on the Street has been placing pianos in public places in iconic locations throughout Metro Vancouver for the community to enjoy. A focal point at popular gathering places, the colourful pianos are a catalyst for drawing people together and sparking conversations between people.
