Family Fun and Insider’s Look at Public Works at May 26 Open House

Curious about how water gets from the reservoir to your tap? Want to see some big trucks up close? Curious how street lights are controlled?

Residents can get an insider’s look at Port Coquitlam’s Public Works services – from water to waste, roads to parks – at a free Community Open House on May 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Public Works Yard at 1737 Broadway St.

Open to all Port Coquitlam residents, the festival-style event will be educational and fun, with:

Name/Decorate the Street Sweeper

New this year Port Coquitlam residents are invited to submit their ideas for names for the City’s new street sweeper on social media tagging @CityofPoCo and using the hashtag #pocopublicworks. Students are also invited to submit artwork for a mural that can be used to wrap the new truck. The top five designs will be shortlisted by staff to be voted on by participants at the Open House.

Held during Public Works Week May 20 to 26, the open house is supported by CUPE Local 498 and is intended to raise awareness about the public works services that residents use every day. In Port Coquitlam, the Public Works division provides waste collection services and maintains and improves city infrastructure, such as streets and sidewalks; parks, trails and public spaces; the sewer, water and drainage system; and the city fleet.

This year’s Public Works Week theme is Public Works Powers Us, highlighting the impact public works has on many facets of life.
