Get Ready to Vote in the Civic Election on October 15
Port Coquitlam residents will select a mayor, councillors and school trustees on October 15. Residents have until August 23 to make sure they’re on the Voters List or they will have to register at the polls.
Anyone registered as a provincial voter is automatically registered to vote in the civic election.
Port Coquitlam residents who are not sure if they’re on the Voters List can confirm by visiting the Elections Office at Port Coquitlam City Hall (2580 Shaughnessy Street) or by calling 604.927.5212.
Advanced voter registrations will be accepted at City Hall until Aug. 23 or at the polls on Oct. 15 or at the advance polls on Oct. 5 or 8.
Voters must be:
- a resident of Port Coquitlam or a property owner in Port Coquitlam for at least 30 days before the day of registration,
- age 18 or older as of Oct. 15, 2022,
- a Canadian citizen,
- a B.C. resident for the past six months, and
- not disqualified from voting
Please bring two pieces of identification to register, such as a passport or drivers licence and proof of residency (e.g. a phone bill).
Planning to Run for Office?
Those interested in running for Mayor, Councillor or School Trustee can pick up a candidate nomination package at City Hall (2580 Shaughnessy Street) or download at portcoquitlam.ca/election. The time period for filing nomination papers is from 9:00 a.m. Tues. Aug. 30 to 4:00 p.m. Fri. Sept. 9
Qualifications for Office:
To be nominated, elected and hold office as Mayor, Councillor or School Trustee, you must be:
- a Canadian citizen,
- 18 years of age or older on election day (Oct. 15, 2022),
- a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day you file your nomination papers, and
- not disqualified by the Local Government Act from voting in a B.C. election or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding office.
One mayor, six councillors and two school trustees will be elected to run for a four-year term. Cities and school boards are the closest level of government to residents, making decisions that affect property taxes, development in our community, City services and schools.
