Grand Opening Celebration for New Fitness Centre on Dec. 12
PORT COQUITLAM, BC – Nov. 25, 2019… A state-of-the-art fitness centre will open Dec. 12 in the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC) with a free evening celebration featuring free Zumba dancing, free classes, family activities, giveaways and more.
The opening of the 8,500-square-foot fitness centre continues the rollout of new PCCC amenities in downtown Port Coquitlam that began in August with two ice arenas, Terry Fox Library, Wilson Lounge and kitchen, a games room, multi-purpose rooms and a concession.
“Each new amenity that opens brings another much-needed service, and takes us a step closer to achieving our vision of a vibrant community hub and catalyst for future growth,” Mayor Brad West said. “Our new fitness centre is a stunning facility and provides families and residents with an affordable and accessible way to stay active in the heart of our downtown.”
The new fitness centre will offer state-of-the-art equipment, cardio and functional training zones, personal and group training, and two studios with fitness, yoga, dance and spinning classes. Spanning two floors it will be a bright, modern space with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the city, mountains and the pool zone below.
The grand opening event on Dec. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. will include giveaways, a draw for a one-year One City multi-site recreation pass, and the following activities:
- 5 p.m.: Event opens
- 5:10 p.m.: Family Zumba Dance Party – lobby
- 5:30 p.m.: Opening remarks and ribbon-cutting – begin in lobby
- 6-8 p.m.: Tours, trial classes for ages 12-plus (yoga, spinning, group fitness classes and fitness equipment try outs) in the fitness centre, family/children’s activities in library, play zone in multi-purpose room and free popcorn at the concession
- 8-9 p.m. – Free weight room workout (for ages 12 plus)
“This is a fantastic addition to our community and a great way for our residents to stay healthy,” said Cllr. Glenn Pollock, Council’s designate for recreation. “We invite everyone to come check out the new fitness centre and everything our facility has to offer.”
Visitors to the new fitness centre will find a wide variety of commercial-quality equipment, including multiple cardio options (treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent bikes and rowing machines), a Synrgy 360 functional training zone, strength stations and free weights, bright well-equipped studios, a wheelchair-accessible circuit, and recognized brands such as Cybex, Precor, Octane and Matrix.
The promotional schedule in effect from Dec. 13 to 31 will include free trial classes, use of equipment and orientations (details at www.portcoquitlam.ca/pccc). Regular operations will begin in January 2020.
The fitness centre is part of the PCCC’s Phase 1 construction that will wrap up in spring 2020 with the opening of a leisure pool and related amenities.
Site preparation work is already underway for Phase 2 amenities that will follow in 2021, including a third arena with spectator seating for 780, a gymnasium, children’s area, more multi-purpose spaces, underground parking, a café, and outdoor plazas and sport courts.
Parking is limited at the community centre during construction. Users are encouraged to walk, carpool or take transit when possible.
To be completed in late 2021, the PCCC project is replacing aging recreation and library spaces with new and enhanced services to meet the growing community’s needs. Groundbreaking and construction of the PCCC began in 2017, using a phased approach that has allowed existing amenities to remain open until they are replaced. The city is constructing the project with design-build partner Ventana Construction.
