MEDIA RELEASE – Port Coquitlam Offering Free Swimming At Outdoor Pools
PORT COQUITLAM, BC – APRIL 21, 2023… City of Port Coquitlam outdoor pools, Centennial and Robert Hope will now be open for free drop-in swimming.
Port Coquitlam is the first City in the Tri-Cities to offer free drop-in outdoor swim as a way of encouraging families to recreate together, promote the healthy development of children, ensuring access for all community members to a safe, supervised recreation environment and providing opportunities to learn to swim, a critical life safety skill.
“I am very excited to offer free drop-in swimming for Port Coquitlam families at a time when many are struggling with rising costs. Recreation activities like swimming have an important role to play in helping to build strong and connected communities.” said Mayor Brad West. “Once again, Port Coquitlam is showing real leadership.This free access to outdoor aquatic amenities expands access to recreation which provides numerous benefits to the individual participants and the entire community.”
Outdoor pools continue to gain popularity and are one of the most utilized recreation elements offered by the City. Parks, spray parks and outdoor swimming pools are destinations for families seeking outdoor recreation experiences for free, safe and fun activities during the summer season.
“Outdoor swimming is a great way to be active and stay cool during the summer.” said Cllr. Steve Darling, Council’s designate for recreation. “I encourage all Port Coquitlam residents to take the opportunity get out, and enjoy our city pools.”
At the end of summer 2023, staff will report back to Council with a summary of the program’s success.
Centennial Pool Opening Early – May 1
The pool located at 3050 Chester street is one of two outdoor pools that will open early to help Port Coquitlam residents to enjoy outdoor exercise. Amenities include a 25-metre, heated six-lane pool with a one-metre diving board, warm showers and separate change rooms with facilities that are wheelchair accessible.
Residents can visit the City’s outdoor swimming pool during the following hours of operation:
- Mon. – Fri. – 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Sat. and Sun. – 10:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m
- Aquatic Fitness classes (shallow/deep) – For dates, times and to register visit portcoquitlam.ca/register. Fees apply.
- Swimming Lessons (all ages): Swim lessons will be available for a variety of swim levels in the summer. View the summer leisure guide online at portcoquitlam.ca/leisureguide (available online on Mon. April 24).
The pool will remain open until the end of September.
The City offers a range of swimming programs for people of all ages and abilities to learn how to swim and how to be safe around water. Financial Assistance and Program Support Available
The City offers a variety of supports and resources to ensure all residents have the opportunity to get involved in recreation and arts programs. Through the Financial Assistance Program, eligible families can receive a 75 percent discount on activities, including camps.
Families can also apply for an Individual Child Grant through Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Program.
