Port Coquitlam, BC – October 11, 2018… Port Coquitlam gave the go-ahead this week to almost $87 million in capital projects over the next two years that will protect its infrastructure investment while helping residents get around more safely and enjoy improved facilities.

Tuesday night, Council approved the 2019-2020 Capital Plan that builds on the 2018-2019 plan with a continued focus on renewing core infrastructure such as roads, utilities, parks, facilities and technology. Funding is also provided for the continuing construction of the Community Recreation Complex, new sidewalks, traffic calming measures and parks improvements.

“Infrastructure has been one of our city’s top three priorities for a number of years, and we see that reflected in our new capital plan,” Mayor Greg Moore said. “This will continue the improvements residents have been seeing around the city for the past several years, particularly to our transportation network.”

Highlights of projects in 2019, totaling $45.5 million:

• Continuing construction of the Community Recreation Complex and city-wide LED streetlight conversions,
• Sidewalk, pedestrian safety, cycling and traffic calming projects,
• A new spray park for Castle Park,
• Drinking water fountains at Leigh Square and Gates Park,
• Improvements to Thompson Park,
• 5 kilometres of road rehabilitation and utility works, and
• Detail design work for Prairie Avenue improvements.

Projects proposed for 2020, estimated at $41.3 million, include:

• Continuing construction of the Community Recreation Complex and city-wide LED streetlight conversions,
• Sidewalk, pedestrian safety, cycling and traffic calming projects,
• Rehabilitation of three kilometres of road, including work on Coast Meridian Road, Prairie Avenue, Kingsway Avenue, Langan Avenue and Shaughnessy Street,
• Rehabilitation of more than 3.6 kilometres of utility infrastructure,
• Rehabilitation of the Fortress Park and Settlers Park playgrounds,
• Improvements to the PoCoMAP online mapping system,
• A new community garden and a Lions Park Whimsical Garden,
• Replacement of the waterslide stairs and pool tile at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, and
• Software upgrades for efficiency, customer service and licensing requirements.

“The new Community Recreation Complex, the parks improvements and more sidewalks are exciting aspects of our capital plan but equally crucial are the steps we’re taking to protect the significant investment in our roads, buildings and utilities,” said Cllr. Dean Washington, who chairs the Finance and Budget committee.
