Port Coquitlam Pilots Priority Registration for Residents

PORT COQUITLAM, BC – July 23, 2019… Port Coquitlam residents will get a three-day head start on their fall swimming lesson registrations, thanks to a new city pilot program.

Residents can start registering for fall swimming lessons on July 24. The usual start date for fall registration, July 27, will remain in place for non-residents and all other aquatic and recreation programs.

The pilot program was a response to requests from residents who found themselves frequently on waiting lists due to high demand.

“There is a big demand for our recreation programs from both our own residents and people living elsewhere – a testament to how great they are,” Mayor Brad West said. “This issue came to Council’s attention recently and we wanted to test out a potential solution right away that will help improve services for Port Coquitlam residents.”

The pilot program applies to swimming lessons only. Staff taking registrations by phone or in person will require proof of residency during the priority registration period. The online registration system will verify proof of residency based on account and payment information.

As usual, registration will begin at 12:01 a.m. for those registering online, and during regular facility hours for those registering in person or by phone.

“What we’re hoping for is that more residents will have a chance to use the recreation services provided in their own community,” said Cllr. Glenn Pollock, Council’s designate for recreation issues. “We’ll be looking at the results of the pilot this fall to determine if it should continue for the winter season or possibly be expanded to other programs.”

Port Coquitlam offers a wide variety of programs for all ages to get active, stay healthy, learn something new or meet new people.

Program and registration information is provided in the fall Leisure Guide, available online now at www.portcoquitlam.ca/leisureguide or in print in the July 25 issue of the Tri-City News or at any city facility.
