Minnekhada Park Fire Update #2
Minnekhada Park Fire Update #2 – Oct. 2, 2022 – PM
Metro Vancouver continues to work closely with the City, the City of Coquitlam, and surrounding communities to ensure residents remain safe while Metro Vancouver and BC Wildfire Service crews work diligently to suppress the wildfire at Minnekhada Park. Fire crews will remain on scene overnight to monitor the fire and aerial support operations will be redeployed tomorrow. The safety of residents and fire crews is critically important and remains the top priority. Currently, there is no concern for evacuation for residents, no disruptions anticipated for nearby schools, and no structures are at risk. Metro Vancouver has activated an emergency operations centre (EOC), and crews have worked diligently throughout the day to suppress the fire. The park remains closed until further notice and a reminder to please avoid the area. The use of drones over an active wildfire is strictly prohibited. Wildfire smoke in the region may be a concern for some residents. Metro Vancouver monitors air quality, and PM2.5 concentrations that were elevated early in the day dropped due to onshore winds pushing the smoke away. Visit the Air Map website at airmap.ca for air quality readings near you and the BC Government website for advice on how to minimize the health effects of wildfire smoke.
