Preschool Lessons (4 months to 6 years)

The City of Port Coquitlam offers Red Cross Preschool Programs. Features of this program include a progress book so participants can easily track their success, stickers for level completion, and a smoother transition into the Red Cross Swim Kids Program. This exciting program has 8 levels of swim progressions for children aged 4 months through to 6 years. Parent Participation Levels

These are classes for young children accompanied by their parent or caregivers, aged 16 & over.

Parent & Tot Level 1 (Starfish)
4 to 12 months

Babies and their caregivers work on getting wet, buoyancy and movement, front, back and vertical positions in the water, and shallow water entries and exits.

Parent and Tot Level 2 (Duck)
12 to 24 months

Babies and their caregivers work on rhythmic breathing, moving forward and backward, front and back float and recovery, and shallow water entries and exits.

Parent and Tot Level 3 (Sea Turtle)
24 to 36 months

Toddlers and their caregivers work on submersion, front and back floats and 
glides,jumping into chest-deep water with assistance, kicking on front, and front swim.

Non-Parented Level

These classes are typically non parented and geared for children to try on their own, with an instructor. Parents are permitted to assist their child for the first few classes if required.

Ready, Set, Swim
2 years

For those who have completed Sea Turtle and are ready to try lessons by themselves. Parents, as this is a transition level, please be prepared to assist your child in the water if needed.

Preschool Level 1 (Sea Otter)
3 to 5 years

Swimmers work on front and back floats, and glides, kicking on front with buoyant object and will be able to swim 1 meter upon completion of this level.

Preschool Level 2 (Salamander)
3 to 6 years

Swimmers work on improving their front and back floats and jumping into chest-deep water un-assisted. Kicking is added to the front and back glide and swimmers will be able to swim 2 metres upon completion.

Preschool Level 3 Sunfish
3 to 6 years

Swimmers work on kicking and can perform glides (front and back), enter deep water safely, float in deep water, swim with a Person Flotation Device (PFD), and swim 5 meters continuously.

Preschool Level 4 (Crocodile)
3 to 6 years

Swimmers further develop the front and back glide with kick, front and back swim, jump into deep water, swim with a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) in deep water, and swim 10 meters continuously.

Preschool Level 5 (Whale)
3 to 6 years

Swimmers increase their distance on the front and back glide with kick, increase 
distance on front and back swim, learn the sitting dive, and will be able to swim 
15 metres continuously upon completion of the level.
