Cultural Roundtable

April 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join us on April 18, 7-9pm in the Michael Wright Art Gallery in the Gathering Place for the next Cultural Roundtable. This meeting is open to everyone interested in arts, culture and heritage in PoCo.

During the first hour of the roundtable Steve Baylis will present his final design for the new Pride Public Art project and share how the community can take part in creating the installation. This community-engagement project promotes diversity by recognizing and celebrating Port Coquitlam’s LGBTQ2+ community. Baylis has been selected to create and lead the project following a formal request for proposals issued in December in consultation with the LGBTQ2+ community.

The project will include painting select concrete tiles around the fountain at Leigh Square in the rainbow flag colours. The concept of ‘wrapping the space’ represents Port Coquitlam’s continued efforts to embrace all members of the community. A commemorative plaque will also be installed with a message that recognizes and celebrates Port Coquitlam’s LGBTQ2+ community.  The artwork is intended to provide a space for reflection and opportunities for dialogue, building relationships, fostering inclusivity and community pride, while contributing to the area’s cultural vibrancy and supporting the City’s Downtown Action Plan.

Born in Port Coquitlam, Baylis is an internationally recognized visual artist whose work has been exhibited in many local and international galleries and art publications. He studied art and design at Kwantlen University and continued his training at Capilano University.  Baylis combines a range of unique influences with his own driven spiritual inquiry to create art that connects people.
