Emergency Preparedness Volunteers

Volunteers are an essential part of Port Coquitlam’s Emergency Preparedness Program, which prepares the City and community for the effects of a disaster or major emergency. Volunteers receive training and equipment.
Volunteer Opportunities
Community Education
Area of Focus / Purpose: To enhance community resilience through the development and delivery of community education.
Activities include:
- facilitation training;
- updating and delivering Residential, strata/co-op and business education sessions; and
- supporting the coordination of and attending City-events, such as the EP components for May Day parade and Fair
Emergency Support Services (Documentation)
Area of Focus / Purpose: To enhance operational readiness by reviewing and maintaining ESS documentation, and associated processes.
Activities include:
- Quarterly meetings with regular training and scenario-based discussions
- Documentation management
- Drills and Exercises
EPCOM (Emergency Communications/Amateur Radio)
Area of Focus / Purpose: To enhance operational readiness by maintaining radio and sat phone systems, and making recommendations on how to enhance the integration of them into the City’s ESS and EOC response activities.
Activities include:
- Conducting monthly Radio Tests
- Providing subject matter expertise to the City’s EP Program staff
- Coordinating and hosting the annual Field Day weekend
Equipment and Supplies
Area of Focus / Purpose: To enhance operational readiness through training and familiarization of EP equipment and supplies.
Activities include:
- testing of EP equipment, e.g. all generators are run to ensure they are properly maintained; and
- conduct inventory checks of EP equipment and supplies.
Pet Services
Area of Focus / Purpose: To enhance community resilience through education of pet preparedness and increase operational readiness by planning for the management of pets during Emergency Support Services activations.
Activities include:
- Quarterly meetings with regular training and scenario-based discussions
- Documentation management
- Drills and Exercises
