Volunteer Opportunities
The Emergency Program has number of opportunities for volunteering, including:
Emergency Preparedness Community Education
Emergency Preparedness Community Education Volunteers educate the general public and special interest groups on personal emergency preparedness and basic fire extinguisher training.
Emergency Support Services (ESS)
Emergency Support Services (ESS) volunteers assist staff by providing food, lodging, clothing and emotional support to people impacted by emergencies and/or disasters. ESS volunteers also help with the set up and operation of ESS emergency centres; including Reception Centres where evacuees are registered and provided assistance and Group Lodging Centres where evacuees are temporarily housed.
Emergency Preparedness Communications (EPCOM)
Emergency Preparedness Communications (EPCOM) Volunteers provide back up emergency communications to the city during disasters. Each volunteer holds an Amateur Radio License and is trained in the deployment and use of numerous modes of emergency communications.
Additional Opportunities
Emergency Program Volunteers roles and activities may also include:
- ESS Pet Services – dealing with the pets of evacuees
- Emergency Supplies inventory and maintenance – inspecting and maintaining emergency supply caches
- Ongoing training and development in emergency preparedness
