Summer 2020 – Moresports BC, Game Ready Fitness & Westcoast Family Centre teamed up for a summer camp at a PoCo School to help some families during the pandemic. These families who could not have respite support for their kids or needed day camp support, so they could go back into work as an essential worker. These kids needed some help from these volunteer youth mentors to help them have some “fun” during a pandemic summer. This camp was able to have room for just 2 volunteers.
The volunteers needed to support the program and mentor the kids who were attending. This included lunch/snack time supervision, teaching a few new games, playing some “one on one games” or helping kids join in the activity or leave an activity when some children felt challenges with their behaviour and were feeling higher anxieties.
We have recently heard feedback from a couple families who said their child who attended the camp still speaks highly about the volunteers they met. This volunteer said he realized that these kids had parents doing a tough job during the pandemic and this camp was a good way to make sure their kids were having a good day.
