Volunteer Spotlight: Lucas Hotra
Lucas Hotra is a twenty-three year old Port Coquitlam resident and an active volunteer at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre. Lucas does an exceptional job organizing pool equipment and ensuring that the pool deck is clear and safe for participants. On top of volunteering, Lucas also participates in the Masters Swim Program at Hyde Creek, meaning on some days of the week he volunteers in the morning, and then returns to the pool to swim in the evening. Lucas shows commitment and dedication to his volunteer position at the pool and has a love for swimming.
Lucas began his volunteer journey with the City of Port Coquitlam in 2018, when he reached out to the City to see if there was a way that he could help out around the pool after his Masters swim classes. According to Jordan Bell, the Recreation Program Assistant for Aquatics, “Lucas always comes to Volunteering with a smile. He cleans up deck equipment and organizes it, contributing to a safe environment for our swimmers. We are super grateful to have him as part of our team.” Lucas has hardly missed a day in the 2 years since, which shows exemplary commitment to his volunteer position. His favourite volunteer tasks are putting the kickboards and belts away, cleaning the pool deck and sorting the lifejackets. When asked what his biggest accomplishment was of last year, Lucas proudly replied, “working at Hyde Creek Pool.” His goal for 2020 is to volunteer at the pool located in the new Port Coquitlam Community Centre.
Lucas is the founder of a small business called “Luke’s Bark Shop,” where he creates and bakes dog treats to sell to the community. This business is an achievement for Lucas and was created out of his love for dogs; particularly his aunt’s, which he described as “big and brown.” When Lucas is not at the pool or working, he enjoys going for walks, bowling and playing basketball. Lucas also has a passion for trains, and is a big fan of Thomas the Tank Engine and Percy the Small Engine.
The City of Port Coquitlam’s Recreation Department would like to thank Lucas for making a positive impact in the community!
