The City of Port Coquitlam is advancing plans for a new Multi-Use Sport Covered Facility to support local sports, year-round play and community and competitive activities.
The Government of British Columbia has committed $3 million in funding, alongside previously approved City capital budget allocations, to help deliver an inviting and versatile facility that strengthens Port Coquitlam’s recreation infrastructure.
What We’re Building
The facility is designed to expand year-round, dry-floor sport opportunities while improving site access and safety.

Planned elements include:
Mass timber building to support flexible, multi-sport programming
New washrooms and change rooms
Spectator seating
Improved parking and site access
Enhanced lighting for safety and visibility
Replacement trees and landscaping enhancements
Pathway connections to support walking, cycling and accessibility
Location
The project is planned on a portion of 2265 Prairie Avenue, commonly referred to as the Shaughnessy Bike Park area. The building is proposed as a mass timber structure, showcasing feature wood as part of the design.
The facility is intended to be situated closer to the Shaughnessy Street frontage to help maintain environmental setbacks from the Coquitlam River and to integrate with planned site services and access.
The City’s design approach will prioritize sustainable materials and strategies that integrate the facility into this natural area.
Bike Park
As the project progresses, the City is developing a plan to relocate and revitalize the bike park in a new area. More information will be shared as options are confirmed.
Construction Impacts and What to Expect
There will be no impact to the Shaughnessy Dog Park.
The multi-use path (MUP) on Shaughnessy Street may have periodic, short-term closures to support specific construction activities. When closures are required, the City will provide:
On-site signage
Clearly marked detours
Advance notice when timing is confirmed
Traffic on Shaughnessy Street will not be affected by this work, with the exception of construction vehicles egressing the site from time to time.
The City and contractors will work to keep noise and disruption to a minimum, including:
Limiting high-noise activities to approved work hours
Using best practices for dust control and site housekeeping
Coordinating work to reduce repeated closures or interruptions where possible
To support safe construction and site access, the contractor will begin clearing approximately 35 lower-value trees. In some cases, these trees present safety concerns due to their condition and risk of failure.
Tree replacement
Trees will be replanted on-site as part of the project landscaping, and the City is also coordinating with Parks to support additional tree planting in other locations across the community.
Funding
The project will be funded through a combination of:
Provincial contribution ($3 million)
City capital budget allocations previously approved
Timeline and next steps
Construction readiness activities are underway (including fencing and initial site preparation).
Anticipated schedule (subject to change)
Construction start: 2026
Project completion: Spring 2027
FAQ
No. There will be no impact to the Shaughnessy Dog Park.
The Shaughnessy Street multi-use path may have periodic short-term closures during specific construction activities. Detours and signage will be in place when required.
No. Traffic on Shaughnessy Street will not be affected.
Some trees in the work area are in poor condition or present safety concerns. Removals are required for safe construction and site access, and replanting is planned as part of the project landscaping and through additional planting elsewhere in the community.
The City is developing a plan to relocate and revitalize the bike park to support the Multi-Use Sport Covered Facility project. Planning is underway and includes reviewing potential locations, required amenities and the type of riding features that could be delivered in a new or updated space.
More details, including a preferred approach, will be shared once technical review is complete.
Greenmount has been discussed as a potential option, but no final decision has been confirmed at this time. The City is evaluating feasible locations and will provide an update when a preferred site and concept are identified.
The current concept is to deliver the Multi-Use Sport Covered Facility within the existing Shaughnessy site area. As planning advances, the City will confirm whether any bike park elements could be retained on-site and how riders will be accommodated during and after construction.
Yes. The City intends to share the bike park plan publicly once options are refined, and will outline opportunities for residents and user groups to provide input. Timing and format will be confirmed as planning progresses.
From more than a dozen sites reviewed across the city, five locations were shortlisted:
Shaughnessy Bike Skills Park
Cedar Park
Evergreen Park
Gates Park
Wellington Park
The Shaughnessy Bike Skills Park location was selected based on a number of factors, including strong site synergies, revitalization potential, access, and broader community benefits.
