Seniors and people with disabilities on a limited income may receive discounts on their utility bills if they meet all of the following criteria:
- The owner of the property for which the charge is assessed.
- either 65 years of age or over at any time during the calendar year in which the charge is assessed, OR are disabled and receiving assistance or a supplement under the BC Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act,
- living on the property and considering it to be their principal residence,
- do not own any other property as defined in the Assessment Act,
- the property does not contain a suite, and
- total annual net income (line 236) does not exceed the threshold of $29,632 per person if they are the sole occupier of the residence or the threshold of $36,893 if more than one person occupies the residence.
Applications must be completed each year. Applications must include a copy of the most recent available Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment (e.g, when submitting for 2024, include your 2022 Notice of Assessment).
If you have misplaced your Notice of Assessment, you may request a copy by calling Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281, pressing the star key (*) and providing your Social Insurance Number.
Visit the Tax Office located on the 1st floor of City Hall if you would like to pick up an application in person.
Please complete and return the application before the utility bill due date to avoid penalty (5% after April 2 and an additional 5% after May 31). A completed application must be submitted to the City Collector by December 31st of the current year or the application for discount will be denied.
