Port Coquitlam is set to burst into a vibrant display of colour, honouring the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by the Canadian Army. Last fall, the City’s Horticulture team planted 78,000 spring bulbs, a carefully selected variety, throughout key locations including City Hall, McAllister Avenue, Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, the Cemetery, and various planters across the City, creating a living tribute to the soldiers who served. The display features four select varieties dedicated to the Canadian Army and for their role in the Liberation of the Netherlands,
The planters showcase a stunning array of tulips, including:
- Canadian Liberator Tulips - Displaying a bold, deep red, a classic tulip colour evoking strength and remembrance. Named in honour of all members of the Canadian Army, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marine, who took part in the liberation of Holland during the Second World War.
- Canadian Celebration Tulips: A striking blend of white with vibrant red flames or streaks, also known as the Maple Leaf tulip which resembles the flag of Canada. The official tulip of the 150th anniversary of Canada.
- “Liberation 80” Tulips: White colour. Selected to honour the Canadian Army’s role in the Liberation of the Netherland 80 years ago. Symbolizing peace won by our brave servicemembers.
- “Liberation 75” Tulips: Glowing "Dutch orange" tulip with a pale buttercup yellow base. Honours the Canadian men and women who served during the Second World War and is a symbol of the enduring Dutch – Canadian friendship.
