Project Overview
Replacing an ageing pump station
The Maple Creek Drainage Pump Station was built in 1990 and is now in very poor condition, with structural and electrical issues as well as limitations in capacity, safety, and fish passage. The City is replacing it with a modern facility that can handle greater flows during major storms.
The existing pump style is also not fish passable. The new design will add pumping capacity while allowing fish to pass safely, supporting a healthier Maple Creek alongside stronger flood protection. These upgrades were recommended in the 2021 Maple Creek Integrated Watershed Management Plan.
How it works
A fish-friendly upgrade
Because much of Port Coquitlam sits on low, flat land near the Coquitlam and Pitt rivers, pump stations move stormwater away from neighbourhoods so it can drain safely. The upgraded Maple Creek station adds pumping capacity for heavy rain and uses a fish-passable design, so fish can move safely while the community stays protected.
