Upgrades at Gates Park will further contribute to its long-standing role as a hub for community, recreation and sports activities, creating an intergenerational space that supports the City’s commitment to becoming a leader in sports, recreation, parks, and trails in British Columbia.
The public is invited to join Mayor Brad West, members of Council, and community partners for the official opening of the Gates Park Sports Hub on Monday, September 21 at 3:30pm.
Developed in collaboration with local sports organizations, including Port Coquitlam FC (PoCo Soccer) and the PoCo Sport Alliance, the Gates Park Sports Hub, the Gates Park Sports Hub replaces an underutilized grass field, delivering a new multi-purpose synthetic turf field built to support soccer, field lacrosse, and other field sports, along with a dedicated warm-up pitch. The upgraded site also includes field lighting, a scoreboard, and covered team benches. A new 500-seat spectator grandstand is still under construction and is expected to be completed in 2027. Four new pickleball courts are also part of the site and will be marked with their own ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 29. Improvements to the park entrance, a new decorative plaza, cleared sightlines throughout the site, and a refreshed pathway network, along with an upgraded access road from Reeve Street and additional parking, round out the project.
The project will be funded with approximately $6.7 million in provincial funding and the remaining from the City. The City will fund its share from accumulated surplus funds, with no impact to taxpayers.
The new facility is expected to significantly increase field time and amenities for children, youth, and adult and senior sport in Port Coquitlam, while also creating capacity to host local and regional tournaments and events.
Following a reassessment prompted by rising construction costs, the City moved forward independently with a revised plan to complete upgrades at Gates Park. While the partnership with BC Soccer will not continue, the City remains committed to enhancing local recreation spaces for the community. This approach allows the plan to be more community-focused—prioritizing facilities that serve the needs of Port Coquitlam residents and reflect our local priorities. The upgrades being delivered have a Port Coquitlam focus and will meet the needs of our growing, local sports associations while also providing an enhanced experience for those who visit Gates Park to walk, meet friends and neighbours, and enjoy the park.

Protecting the Urban Forest
The City manages over 5000 trees in parks and boulevards throughout the community and countless trees in forested areas. Nearly 45% of the City’s tree canopy is on City-owned land.
The City is committed to protecting and expanding the community’s urban forest and currently working to develop an Urban Forest Plan to protect and grow the urban forest over the next 30 years.
An additional 32 trees will replace the 16 trees being removed along the pathways. Minimal impacts to the surrounding areas are expected during this work.
