Watering Permit Application

A new lawn – placing of sod, turf or by seeding – or landscaping requires a permit in order to be exempt from the water use restrictions. To reduce water demand, consider planting sod early in the season. Overseeding existing lawns does not require a permit and can be adequately watered within the restrictions.

If you are growing a new lawn by seed or sod during the region-wide water use restrictions (May 1 – October 15), you can apply for a watering permit.

  • A permit allows lawn watering for three hours on any day of the week between 4:00am and 9:00am for the duration of the permit.
  • The permit is $30 and is valid for a period of 21 days from the date of issuance.

Your permit application will be reviewed upon submission. If approved, you will be contacted for payment within 1-3 business days of application date. View Fees & Charges Bylaw here.

Permission for Use: This permit is issued during the water restriction period May 1 to October 15 where the limited hours of sprinkler use is inadequate to support new lawn or landscaping. The applicant is authorized for watering use for three hours on any day of the week between the hours of 4:00 am and 9:00 am for the duration of the 21 day permit.

If Metro Vancouver escalates the Water Shortage Response Plan to Stage 2, the permit will not be renewed. Permits issued in Stage 1 remain in effect until the permit expires.
