Port Coquitlam, BC – October 21, 2025… Dog owners in Port Coquitlam will soon have more spaces to enjoy with their four-legged friends. As part of the 2025 Capital Program, the City approved two new dog park projects at Maple Street and Lions Park to increase accessibility, safety, and enjoyment for both small and large dogs.
“We’ve heard from residents who wanted more off-leash dog parks, and Council and staff have listened,” said Mayor Brad West. “Dogs are part of the family, and we’re proud to be creating more spaces where people and pets can enjoy our community together.”
At Lions Park (2300 Lougheed Highway), the City is developing a new fenced off-leash area on approximately 6,700 square metres, roughly the size of a soccer field, of previously unused parkland on the north side of the site. The new space designed with both small and large dog areas will include land clearing, perimeter fencing, new gates, benches, signage, and garbage bins, along with a short walking trail throughout the enclosure for owners and dogs to enjoy together. Hazardous and smaller trees were selectively removed and left in place to create natural play and obstacle features, and staff are exploring additional obstacle elements in the near future to further enhance the play experience and encourage active engagement for dogs of all sizes. The site is bordered by trails connecting to the PoCo Trail, providing convenient access for residents and trail users.
At Maple Street Dog Park, work is underway to expand the existing park with an additional area of approximately 1.400 square metres at the north side of the park. The expansion will separate small and large dogs, promoting a safer and more comfortable environment for all park users. The area, previously overgrown with vegetation, has undergone selective clearing, hazardous and small, insignificant trees were removed and left in place to serve as natural obstacles and enrichment features for the dogs. The site will include a new perimeter chain-link fence, additional gates, benches, garbage cans, and updated signage and is accessible from the PoCo Trail. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-November 2025.
“These projects reflect what makes Port Coquitlam special,” added Mayor Brad West. “Our community speaks up about what matters, and we deliver. From expanding recreation options to improving public spaces, we’re continuing to create places where residents and their dogs feel at home.”
The new and expanded dog parks are part of Council’s investment in community amenities through the approved 2025 Capital Program. These projects also align with the City’s broader strategy to improve public spaces, optimize underused lands, and upgrade existing amenities in support of a vibrant and connected community. Separating large and small dog areas promotes responsible pet ownership and reduces the risk of on-site conflicts between dogs of different sizes and temperaments.
The City will host an official opening for the new and expanded dog parks in November, with more details to be shared in the coming weeks.
