Port Coquitlam, BC - March 12, 2024 ... Construction of a new loop trail connecting ƛ̓éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park, formerly known as Colony Farm Regional Park to Skyline Park has officially begun.
The City began construction of phase one of the section that includes over 300 timber stairs, a starting elevation of 5 metres rising to 75 metres between Shaughnessy Street and Eastern Drive. The loop trail will be approximately six and a half kilometers long.
"This project is a fantastic addition to the city offering residents a unique space to challenge themselves, get their heart pumping and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds Port Coquitlam." said Mayor Brad West.
The new trek will be seamlessly incorporated into the existing trail infrastructure of the 25.3-kilometre Traboulay PoCo Trail network and include:
- Updated access points with a new pedestrian crossing to connect the trail to ƛ̓éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park
- Improvements to the existing pedestrian crossing at Eastern Drive to Skyline Park
- Installation of wayfinding signage and bridge crossings with a variety of natural elements
- New waste bins and bike racks
The installation of the trail is a major enhancement to Port Coquitlam's pedestrian connections and helps create a more livable and vibrant City for residents and visitors alike. The trek is natured based and the unique construction will impact less than 1% of existing vegetation.
"This new trek will, without a doubt, become one of our community's most popular spots, providing a back-country experience right in the heart of Port Coquitlam," said Mayor West. "I'm incredibly proud that we continue to deliver improvements like this in our city."
Name the Trek
While the trail is under construction, the City is engaging residents in the naming of this trek.
All residents can submit name suggestions at portcoquitlam.ca/pocotrek until April 7. Council and City staff will review names and announce the trek name at the ribbon cutting ceremony in late Spring.
As construction progresses, residents can stay up to date at portcoquitlam.ca/pocotrek.
