PORT COQUITLAM, BC - July 6, 2023... Building on its successful pothole blitz, the City of Port Coquitlam is gearing up for its first ever City Litter Cleanup Blitz from July 10-13 to enhance beautification of the community.
Crews will work through all three areas (downtown, north and south) in the City with each zone expected to take up to five hours with a sweeper finishing up the day. Progress updates will be shared through social media on a daily basis. City crews will work three consecutive days cleaning up the three areas. beginning with the downtown on Mon. July 10, then moving to the north side on Tues. July 11, finishing up on Wed. July 13 on the south side.
"Keeping our city beautiful, clean and safe is a core responsibility of the city and a key part of our of getting the basics right approach. Delivering these core city services that matter to our community are exactly what residents and businesses pay property taxes for," said Mayor Brad West. "Keeping our city looking its best takes everyone's help. Improving the cleanliness of our streets and open spaces in our community makes it more attractive, more enjoyable for everyone and instills civic pride."
As part of the litter cleanup blitz, staff with litter pickers and buckets will be out and about cleaning up litter around the community. As well, residents may notice street sweepers and additional City vehicles on the streets.
The litter blitz will include:
- Roadside litter pick-up, including major arterial roads
- Clean up around targeted catch basins in neighbourhoods
- Surrounding trails
- Street sweeping to clean up debris from streets
- Litter and debris removal in City parks
- Illegal dumping cleanup
- Graffiti cleanup
Residents driving or cycling are advised to expect minor delays around crews. The public is asked to be safe by respecting work zones and giving crews space while they sweep through.
"Along with city crews focusing on cleanliness, we also appreciate the helps from our community. When we see litter in a park or along a roadside, we should consider doing our part to help keep our community clean," said Mayor Brad West.
City crews work hard to keep public spaces clean and safe. Staff are out each day picking up litter, emptying street and park waste bins and sweeping streets. The City continues to have a dedicated presence in the downtown core areas to increase cleaning and maintenance efforts.
Residents can help keep the community clean and beautiful by signing up for the City's Adopt-A-SPOT program. Through the program, local residents, families, youth groups, seniors, businesses, schools and community groups adopt a stretch of street, park or trail for a designated period of time.
Participants keep their area free of litter and assist and report issues and hazards to the City. To learn more about Adopt-A-Spot and to get involved, please visit portcoquitlam.ca/spot.
