Spring is here and the City of Port Coquitlam is set to burst into a vibrant display of colour, honouring the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by the Canadian Army.
Last fall, the City’s Horticulture team planted 78,000 spring bulbs, a carefully selected variety, throughout key locations including City Hall, McAllister Avenue, Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, the Cemetery, and various planters across the City, creating a living tribute to the soldiers who served. The display features four select varieties dedicated to the Canadian Army and for their role in the Liberation of the Netherlands.
The planters showcase a stunning array of tulips, including:
- Canadian Liberator tulips - Displaying a bold, deep red, a classic tulip colour evoking strength and remembrance. Named in honour of all members of the Canadian Army, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marine, who took part in the liberation of Holland during the Second World War.
- Canadian Celebration tulips - Featuring a striking blend of white with vibrant red flames or streaks, also known as the Maple Leaf tulip which resembles the flag of Canada.
- “Liberation 80” tulips – White in colour symbolizing Peace
- “Liberation 75” tulips – Glowing orange tulip with a pale buttercup yellow base
- Triumph Tulips:
- Strong Love – Offering bright red colours
- Suncatcher - Radiating bright, sunny yellows topped with blazing scarlet – red petal edges
- World Friendship - Showcasing a prim rose yellow
As the tulips are now about to burst in the next week or so, the City is encouraging residents to celebrate PoCo in Bloom by sharing photos of the tulips via social media or on the City’s website at portcoquitlam.ca/pocoinbloom and be entered to win one of four bags of these varieties of tulips to be planted for the fall.
These carefully selected tulips serve as a visual representation of the City’s appreciation for the Canadian Army’s sacrifices and contributions. Join us in celebrating this beautiful tribute by visiting the tulip displays and participating in the PoCo in Bloom photo contest.
