Port Coquitlam, BC – July 24, 2025… The City of Port Coquitlam is pleased to provide an update on the essential upgrades to Kingsway Avenue, a vital component of TransLink's major road network. This continuous project, initiated with Phase 1, is designed to comprehensively address existing traffic challenges, enhance safety, and improve accessibility for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
While a new multi-use pathway now enhances active transportation on the north side, the broader Kingsway Avenue corridor currently includes single travel lanes and varied active transportation facilities on its south side and in other sections, highlighting the importance of the ongoing upgrade project. The comprehensive upgrades are the result of a transportation study, conceptual, and detailed designs completed in 2019 and 2020, and continuously reviewed and updated over the past five years. These assessments address current and future traffic performance, new development, increasing truck traffic and queuing, property access and egress, traffic signal operations, business parking, and the lack of active transportation facilities like paths and bicycle lanes.
“These much-needed upgrades to Kingsway Avenue reflect our commitment to investing in the core infrastructure that supports our growing city,” said Mayor Brad West. “By increasing lane capacity, reconfiguring intersections, and adding a new multi-use pathway, we’re making it easier for residents to get around—now and into the future. And this is just the beginning—you’ll see more of these improvements in every part of Port Coquitlam.”
Phase 1 Successfully Completed
The initial phase of the Kingsway Avenue upgrades, which included a new multi-use pathway along the north side, was successfully completed in December 2024. This new pathway has significantly enhanced active transportation options in Port Coquitlam, providing improved accessibility and connectivity for residents and visitors.
Upcoming Phases
The Kingsway Avenue upgrade project will continue with a phased approach to construction through to 2026, building upon the success of Phase 1.
Phase 2 Construction Underway
With the successful completion of Phase 1, the City is pleased to announce that construction for Phase 2 of the Kingsway Avenue upgrades is now underway. Phase 2 will primarily focus on the sections of Kingsway Avenue between Kelly Avenue to west of McLean Avenue and Coast Meridian Road to Mary Hill Bypass. The scope of work generally includes:
- Curb realignment and lane reconfiguration.
- Inclusion of a shared center left turn lane.
- Sidewalk installation along the south side with driveway tie-ins as required.
- Drainage improvements.
- Roadway lighting upgrades.
The contractor actively working on the project will maintain communication with residents and businesses in a manner similar to the communications during Phase 1. Please note that depending on your location along Kingsway Avenue, work may not immediately take place adjacent to your property.
Phase 3 to Commence in 2026
Following the completion of Phase 2, Phase 3 of the project is anticipated to commence in 2026. This phase will include intersection improvements, including the addition of turning lanes where warranted. Further information regarding Phase 3 will be released as 2026 approaches.
Construction Impacts
As is typical with construction of this nature, residents and businesses along Kingsway Avenue may experience temporary impacts. The City and its contractors will work to minimize inconvenience, but these may include:
- Temporary disruptions to traffic flow with some waits and detours. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible.
- Changes to property access where necessary, with advance notice and clear signage provided by the contractor.
- Temporary alterations to boulevards, which are the areas between the roadway and property lines. The City will work with affected property owners regarding features on these boulevards.
The City is committed to minimizing disruptions and ensuring clear communication with affected residents and businesses throughout each phase of this project, as it works to create a safer, more accessible, and efficient transportation network for its growing community. The City thanks residents and businesses for their patience and understanding as it undertakes these important infrastructure improvements.
