Port Coquitlam, BC – November 13, 2025… The City of Port Coquitlam Fire Department is proud to announce a new partnership with BC and Alberta Guide Dogs to introduce a facility support dog program, the first of its kind in the Lower Mainland.
The program will enhance the mental health and wellness of firefighters, City staff and residents by introducing a specially trained dog that will assist individuals following critical incidents, during emergency operations, in community settings, and throughout day-to-day station life.
“Port Coquitlam firefighters respond to some of the most difficult and emotional situations imaginable,” said Mayor Brad West. “Our firefighters are there for us on our worst days, and this program ensures that support goes both ways. By investing in their mental health and wellbeing, we are not only helping those who serve but also strengthening the resilience of our entire community.”
The facility support dog is currently in training and is one of 22 dogs being prepared by BC and Alberta Guide Dogs. It is expected to arrive in Port Coquitlam within the next six months. Once in service, the dog will assist firefighters after traumatic calls, during Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) activations, Emergency Support Services (ESS) events, at group lodging sites, and at Council meetings and community wellness activities where firefighter participation is involved.
The initiative is a first for BC and Alberta Guide Dogs. The dog is being trained to recognize indicators of stress and provide comfort and support during times of heightened emotional need, allowing the handler to provide timely intervention and peer support when it is most needed.
The program was made possible through $45,000 in grant funding, supporting the City’s ongoing focus on proactive approaches to mental health, resilience, and wellness within the Fire Department.
“This is about caring for the people who care for others,” said Blake Clarkson, Fire Chief, City of Port Coquitlam. “Our firefighters face unique challenges on the front lines, and this program provides another tool to help them process those experiences in a healthy and supportive way.”
When the dog arrives, the City will hold a swearing-in ceremony to officially welcome it as a member of the Port Coquitlam Fire Department.
