Port Coquitlam's Annual Watermain Flushing Program Begins Next Week

News
Port Coquitlam's annual watermain flushing program begins next week. This program is essential for maintaining the City's water supply system and ensures the continued delivery of safe and reliable drinking water to residents and businesses.

The City’s annual watermain flushing program will start around February 17 and could take up to 12 weeks.

All residents and businesses in the following areas are part of the watermain flushing zone this year:

  • The area north of Lincoln Avenue, east of Oxford Street and west of Cedar Drive and Hyde Creek.
  • The area west of Oxford Street, north of Lougheed Highway and Davies Avenue, east of Westwood Street and south of Lincoln Avenue.
  • The area south of Lougheed Highway, east of Broadway Street and east of the Coast Meridian Overpass, and south to the Pitt River.

A viewable map is available online at portcoqutilam.ca/watermain.

Flushing is an important part of the City’s ongoing maintenance program to ensure the integrity of the water supply system. The City of Port Coquitlam will flush a significant portion of its watermains this year to minimize sediment deposits that can deteriorate water quality. Flushing generally takes place between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (some exceptions may apply).

During these times, residents and businesses may experience some discolouration of water and intermittent drops in water pressure. While some discolouration or sediment in the water may occur, it is a temporary condition and is not a health concern.

Please follow these guidelines during the watermain flushing program:

  • If your water is discoloured or has sediment, run an indoor cold water tap until the water runs clear. This is usually 20–30 minutes but could take a few hours on rare occasions.
  • Avoid doing laundry while your water is discoloured.
  • Avoid using your hot water if the water is discoloured to prevent sediment from entering your water tank.

Properties may have an internal filter on their water supply line.  If so, and your water supply flow appears to be lower than normal following flushing, we recommend that you clean out the filter in the first instance to help restore flow.  Any internal pressure reducing valve(s) may also need to be checked.
