Port Coquitlam Donald Storywalk Showcases Tiny Stories about Big Adventures

Port Coquitlam, BC – APRIL 20, 2026…The City of Port Coquitlam invites residents and visitors to explore the Donald Storywalk.
 
Located between Elks Park and Wilson Avenue, the Tiny Stories is the fifth edition of the Donald Storywalk and features eight heartwarming stories from the 2025 May Days Flash Fiction contest. Written by local residents and illustrated by B.C. artist Madeline Berger, the collection celebrates creativity, community and the joy of storytelling in a vibrant outdoor setting. 

The project is a collaboration between the City of Port Coquitlam and Terry Fox Library, and is designed to promote literacy while enhancing the downtown experience. 
 
“Donald Storywalk is a great example of how we can bring art, literacy and community together in a way that is accessible and engaging for all ages,” said Mayor Brad West. “By showcasing stories written by local residents in a public outdoor space, this project highlights the creativity in our community while adding another meaningful feature to downtown Port Coquitlam.”

  • The Book Wyrm by Gryphon Pownall

  • Side by Side by Laura Collini

  • The Night the Power Went Out by Ziggy Linklater

“Donald Storywalk is a creative way to share local writing in a public space and make arts and culture part of everyday life in Port Coquitlam,” said Councillor Nancy McCurrach, council designate for arts, culture and heritage.  
  
The eight panels were designed with accessibility in mind, including colour and font choices, and links to audio recordings of each story at portcoquitlam.ca/storywalk
 
The new Donald Storywalk offers another way for residents and visitors to experience the community spirit of May Days, featuring stories from the 2025 May Days Flash Fiction Contest in a creative outdoor setting.

About the Illustrator 
 
Madeline Berger is a comics creator, illustrator and part-time gardener. Their work explores community care, queer identity and relationships beyond the human form through vivid illustrations and concise narratives. Prioritizing accessible colour palettes and inventive compositions, Madeline is known for poster work created for organizations including the Vancouver Tenants Union, Briarpatch Magazine and the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival.

Madeline lives on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səlilwətaɬ Nations, also known as Vancouver. In December 2024, they released their second graphic novel, Belly Full of Heart, with Silver Sprocket. Learn more about their work at instagram.com/fungalmatters
