City to Host Information Session for 2026 General Local Election

Thinking of running for office in this year's municipal election? Join us for a candidate information session. 

On Thursday, June 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., the City's Election Office will host an information session for those interested in running for Mayor, Councillor, or School Board Trustee. The session will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall, 2580 Shaughnessy Street. 

The information session will cover everything prospective candidates need to know about the upcoming election, including the Municipal Elections Act, responsibilities of elected officials, expected time commitment and compensation, election sign regulations, required forms and documents, key dates, and more. Staff will be available to answer questions. To help with planning, those who plan to attend are encouraged to RSVP to [email protected]. 

The nomination filing period runs from 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11. The municipal election will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to elect one Mayor, six City Councillors, and two School Board Trustees. 

Nomination packages will be available for pick-up at the information session, or as of June 25 at the Election Office at City Hall (2580 Shaughnessy Street), and for download at portcoquitlam.ca/election

This session is recommended for potential candidates and key campaign staff. 

Qualifications for Office 

To be nominated, elected, and hold office as Mayor, Councillor, or School Board Trustee, individuals must be: 

  • a Canadian citizen; 

  • 18 years of age or older on election day (October 17, 2026); 

  • a resident of British Columbia (since March 10, 2026); and  

  • not disqualified by the Local Government Act from voting in a B.C. election or from being nominated for, elected to, or holding office. 

Local governments and school boards are the closest level of government to residents, with decisions that affect property taxes, community development, City services, and schools. 

Mail Ballot Voting 

Mail ballot voting is available for qualified voters in Port Coquitlam who are unable to attend the polls on election day or during advance voting opportunities.
