Heat & Air Quality: Yellow Warnings Issued

Notice

Yellow warnings for heat and air quality remain in effect:

  • Daytime highs are expected to be in the low to mid-30s, with overnight lows in the mid to high teens. A gradual cooling trend will begin Thursday.
  • Ground-level ozone (smog) is expected to reach elevated levels Wednesday afternoon. Conditions are expected to improve by the weekend with a change in the weather.

In these conditions, it is crucial to protect yourself and others proactively. Check on family, friends and neighbours who are at higher risk from heat and poor air quality, particularly if they live alone.

  • Where to go to keep cool:
    • Outdoor pools, including Centennial Pool, Robert Hope Pool, Routley Tot Pool and Sun Valley Tot Pool
    • City spray parks at Castle Park, Sun Valley Park, Lions Park and Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC)
    • Public spaces with air-conditioning, such as Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC), Hyde Creek Recreation Centre (HC) or Terry Fox Library
  • Keep cool at home and on the go:
    • Take cool showers or baths
    • Stay hydrated
    • Seek out shade
    • Wear sun protection, including a hat and sunscreen
    • Schedule activities during cooler parts of the day
    • Never leave children or pets unattended
  • Tips for poor air quality:
    • Use portable HEPA air cleaners
    • Keep windows and doors closed while running air filtration
    • Wear a well-fitted N95, KN95 or KF94 mask for the most protection outside
    • Spend time indoors. Places with air conditioning are recommended to help keep cool.
    • Manage chronic conditions and carry rescue medications with you (e.g. inhalers)
  • Know the signs of heat illness:
    • Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps and confusion.
