Port Coquitlam, BC – January 30, 2025…The City of Port Coquitlam is excited to announce progress is underway on phase 2 of the PoCo Climb trail.
Phase 1 of the project was completed in the summer of 2024, featuring over 150 timber stairs and elevation gains from 5 metres to 75 metres between Shaughnessy Street and Eastern Drive. This phase also included the installation of a new crosswalk with flashing beacons to safely connect ƛ̓éxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park to the PoCo Climb section of the trail.
Phase 2 focuses on enhancing connectivity and usability. This phase includes the installation of a unique rock stair scramble combination through Skyline Park, extending from Eastern Drive to the plateau, as well as a gravel walkway connection. Unforeseen delays in the delivery of critical materials and challenges posed by adverse weather, including a recent atmospheric river, impacted the timeline, delaying the project to now. Despite these challenges, the City remains committed to completing this exciting active lifestyle project by the end of spring 2025.
“I’m thrilled with how popular Phase 1 of the PoCo Climb trail has been. Our city is committed to providing more opportunities for residents to stay active and healthy, and it’s wonderful to see so many people enjoying the new trail. Phase 2, with its’ unique granite boulder scramble and beautiful views, will make this addition to our community even better,” said Mayor Brad West.
To celebrate the completion of the entire PoCo Climb, the City will host a grand opening event in late spring 2025. Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend. Further details will be provided as the event date approaches.
The phase 2 of the new trek will be seamlessly incorporated into the existing trail infrastructure of the 25.3-kilometre Traboulay PoCo Trail network and include:
- Updated access points with a new pedestrian crossing
- Improvements to the existing pedestrian crossing at Eastern Drive to Skyline Park
- Installation of wayfinding signage and bridge crossings with a variety of natural elements
- A rising rock section that offers 122 continuous stairs and a rock laden path to a landing at its summit.
- An exciting granite boulder 'scramble' runs alongside for those who seek adventure
- Visitors to this section of the new trail can enjoy amazing unobstructed views of ƛéxətəm (tla-hut-um) Regional Park.
The installation of the trail is a major enhancement to Port Coquitlam’s pedestrian connections and helps create a more livable and vibrant City for residents and visitors alike.
“By integrating the new trek into the existing trail network, we are creating a seamless experience for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The PoCo Climb trail will offer breathtaking views and unique features that highlight the natural beauty of our city.” said Mayor Brad West.
